    Bhagirathi

    The Bhagirathi is the source of the river Ganga river in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. This holy river is named after legendary king Bhagirath who helped bring mother Ganga to earth for the salvation of his ancestors and to wash away their sins.

    Gomukh or Gaumukh is the physical source of river Bhagirathi or the upper Ganga is at an height of 13,200 ft above sea - level. The Gangotri glaciers are one of the most biggest glaciers of the Himalayan regions and the terminal point of the glacier resemble a cow’s mouth, hence the place is known as Gomukh.

    The beautiful river is surrounded by snow capped mountains peaks of Kedarath, Bhagirathi Group, Sumeru and the highest Chaukhamba, dense deodar and coniferous forests and awe - aspiring scenic environments.

    The Bhagirathi river flows from Uttarakhand in North India to Chennai Rameshwaram in South India. The Bhagirathi is joined by many mighty rivers during this journey.

    According to legends Kind Bhagiratha did severe penance to please goddess Ganga and asked her to come down to earth in order to cleanse the ashes of his ancestors.

    Goddess Ganga agreed and came to the earth held together by the lock of Lord Shiva in the form of Gangotri glaciers and travelled all the way to Haridwar and granted salvation to King Bhagiratha's ancestors.

    Legends believe that it is the holy water of Rameshwaram which was offered to Lord Shiva when he drank the poison which emerged during samudra manthan.

    The beautiful Bhagirathi merges with the mighty Alaknanda in Devprayag and gets its name as the Ganga from this place. The Jadhganga and the Bhilangana get merged with the Bhagirathi river prior to Alaknanda.

    Bhagirathi River in Uttarakhand is a part of Garhwal tourism, and the local languages spoken are Gadhwali and Hindi. The best time to visit would be from May - June and September - October.

    Light woollens in summer and heavy woollens in winter is advisable. The summer season extends from March to July. The winter season is from September to Febraury. Snowfall is expected around Jan - March.
