Nanda Devi Wildlife National Park lies in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. The main entry point to the park is via Lata village, some 25 km from Joshimath.
It is surrounded by high mountain peaks on all sides except its western side, which features a deep and inaccessible gorge.
Nanda Devi, is a manifestation of Goddess Parvati and the Hindus worship the entire basin every 12th year. Devotees from far and wide approach the foot of Trishul to worship Nanda Devi.
The area is well known for it peaceful, quite and remote wilderness. The river Ganga flows through here from the mountains.
The sanctuary is mostly free from human settlement and enroachments this increase the beauty of the wildlife park. Many part of the wildlife sanctuary are almost not reachable.
Nanda Devi is rich in wildlife tourism and Leapords, Himalayan bear, wolves, snow leopards, Himalayan Black Bear and different varieties of deer such as barking deer and the musk deer can also be seen here in the sanctuary.
A total of around 120 - 140 different varieties of bird species can be found in the park.
Nanda Devi was established as a game sanctuary in 1939. It was notified as a Wildlife National park in 1982. Nanda Devi was listed on the World Heritage List in 1988.
It supports a diverse flora, and fauna including a number of rare and endangered species. To protect the flora and fauna here, the number of tourists movement is restricted.
Mostly two or three groups of five people are allowed at one time. The minimum age limit is around 14 yrs.
Nanda Devi is one of the most beautiful wild life sanctuaries of the world today.
To visit Nanda Devi permission from DFO Joshimath has to be taken one day prior in advance.
Nanda Devi in Chamoli Garhwal, Uttarakhand is a part of Garhwal tourism, and the local languages spoken are Kumaoni, Gadhwali and Hindi. The best time to visit Nanda Devi would be from September - June.
