    Ukhimath is a small hilly town in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand India. It lies in the Garhwal Himalayas, 40kms on the way to Kedarnath. It is believed that Ukhimath is Lord Shivas's ( Kedarnath ) resting place for the winters.

    The beautiful town is surrounded with coniferous and oak forests, and also offers a fantastic view of the snowy mountain peaks of Nanda Devi , Mana Parbat, Beethartoli, Neelkanth, Chowkhamba and Komet.

    Ukhimath Legend and History

    Legends believe that the great grand son of Lord Krishna got married here in Ukhimath to the daughter of daemon king Vanasur.

    The name of the daughter was Usha. In maith means ( father's home ) means the home of Usha's father. Now known as Ukhimath.

    Ukhimath Temple

    When the Kedarnath temple remains closed during the winter, one idol of Lord Kedarnath is then transferred to the Ukhimath temple and worshipped here for six months and later duly transferred back to Kedarnath.

    The priests of the Kedarnath Temple stay here in a village nearby Ukhimath.

    Places to visit in Ukhimath

    Omkareshwar Temple This holy temple is dedicated to Lord Omkareshwar. A silver statue of Lord Omkareshwar is installed in the temple.

    Chandra Shekara Mahadev Temple This holy temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple has a holy kund which is believed to be filled by the waters of the rivers Gangotri and Yamunotri. Breathtaking view of the snow capped Himalayas can also be seen from the temple.

    Ardha Narishwar Temple This holy temple in Ukhimath is dedicated to Lord Vishwanath. It also offers a beautiful view of the Garhwal snow peaked Himalayas.

    Visit Chopta a beautiful and quiet hill station. Chopta is also well known for bird watching and is equally famous in the world among bird lovers and bird watchers. Explore Chopta for many trekking opportunities as it is a a base camp for various trekking routes

    Kedarnath is one of the most important of pilgrim centre in Uttarakhand dedicated to Lord Shiva.

    Panch Kedar is dedicated to Lord Shiva and a must visit when in Ukhimath. The trek to the temples is a mix of outstanding beauty and spiritual pilgrimage as it is an extended for of the Char Dham Yatra.
